5 questions to Susan Crawford, Chief Executive Officer of the SCCC

What’s the primary mission of the Sister Carmen Community Center?
SCCC’s mission is to assist residents of Eastern Boulder County who are in need, without discrimination.

What is your role there?
I am the Chief Executive Officer

What is the most common misconception about the Sister Carmen Community Center?
The most common misconception is that we are a religious organization, but we are an independent non-religious 501(c) 3. SCCC is named after a Catholic nun, Sister Carmen Platnik, who provided food and other necessities to people in need in the Lafayette area in the early 1970’s. In 1976, John Fiorini his employer, IBM, provided seed money to officially start the organization. SCCC became an official non-profit organization in 1978 and this year we are celebrating our 40th anniversary.
As a Family Resource Center, we have implemented expanded services and enhanced programming based on the FRC model to help our participants to reach their full human potential. This model is a holistic coordinated approach that supports the entire family as they take steps towards self-reliance in key areas that affect their stability (i.e. food, housing, employment, childcare, etc).
